This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach in a Title I, urban school. My students are often lacking in the basic resources like coats, uniforms, and school supplies needed for life. The school provides breakfast, lunch, and dinner. We provide as many resources as possible to them.
Research shows that if children read 15 minutes a day, they will score in the 80% on standardized tests.
Of course, this is not my end goal. I want my students to become life long lovers of books.
My Project
The students love to read independently. They have designated time and a variety of books to choose from in their daily literacy block.
When the children are asked to read at home, they often say they don't have anything to read.
I loan them books in plastic bags for home reading, but I won't be able to do that this summer.
Most of the children will not have access to Summer Reading Programs at the Public Library. In order to keep their brains active and avoid the Summer Slide, I want my students to have at least 3 books each to read.
