My Students

My fifth grade students want to change the world! They are curious investigators who want to make a difference for their generation. I would like to provide them with the opportunity to discover first hand the benefits of renewable energy and how it can reduce our carbon footprint.

My young scientists attend a public middle school where 50% of the student population receive free or reduced lunch.

They love science and want to become future engineers, physicists, and researchers. I want to give them the opportunity to explore science in a way that is relative to them and can affect their future. They live in the Great Plains region where the majority of wind potential is located. It is also a region where studies have shown that most students know very little about the different forms of renewable energy. I would like to change that statistic by allowing them to perform hands-on experiments and inquire more about wind energy. By taking this ancient resource and teaching them new technologies, my students will investigate an area of science where they might have a future job.

My Project

Wind turbine kits are designed to allow students to learn the physics of force and motion as it applies to wind power technology. My students will work in small groups with their wind turbine kits to explore the different variables of wind power like wind speed, blade design, and blade size. They will use the scientific method and analyze the data they report. These kits will provide them with the knowledge they need about future energy alternatives and the potential jobs that they create.

This project is important because every child should be given the opportunity of learning through experience.

Wind power is something they see and feel everyday…it is in their own backyard! I want to teach my students that wind energy is the fastest growing energy source in the world and it is an area where scientists and technicians will be needed in the future.
