Get a (Non-fiction Reading) Life!

My students need a selection of 43 non-fiction book titles that reflect who they are and their experiences. For many male students, non-fiction is all they will read.

My Students

"There are different strokes for different folks." The only way to create life long readers is to flood students with a wide range of interesting reading materials. Non-fiction books are most often the "in" for reluctant readers in my classroom.

The students in my room come from various backgrounds- economic and cultural- and bring with them a wide variety of abilities and interest levels.

In a typical class, we have students new to the US from North Africa and South America , students with IEPs, title one qualified students, and the talented and gifted kids all together with the "general" education students. The diversity of the students requires a diversity of reading materials: wide ranges of levels and non-fiction topics that reflect the faces and experiences of students in my classroom.

My Project

A key to engagement is relevancy. How do these books relate to me? The diversity of books in the project reflects the diversity of the students in my room. Additionally, there are students in my room who will not read anything that is not "real" and my library needs a dose of "real" for these readers. The Tookie Williams book, for example, hooks many of my adolescent boys and generates its own reader wait list. After reading that book and the conversations it generates, boys start searching out equally "hot topics" for their next reads.

By providing books "just for them," not only will students be able to craft and expand their reading lives, but they will also see that adults do care about them enough to meet their individual book needs.

This builds trust and a bond with school, which are both keys to academic success.
