My Project

I teach high school German, levels one through four. For many of my students, this is their first and only experience learning a language. The majority of our class time is focused on language acquisition. However, learning the language is not the only goal of my course.

For many of my students, German class is the only time in their lives when they will learn and think critically about a culture other than their own.

My job is to help broaden their world view and consider opinions and perspectives that they otherwise would not have come into contact with. I do this by incorporating cultural practices and products into my lessons, as well as during our after school German club.

The supplies requested will allow me to share more authentic cultural experiences with my students from German speaking regions of the world. The supplies will be use to make St. Martin's Day Lanterns and organize a parade for younger students, design and decorate Lebkuchenherzen to celebrate Oktoberfest, learn about the history of Scherenschnitte, a paper cutting art form, and then create our own masterpieces, as well as make Spaghetti Eis, a German ice cream specialty. These activities are all key experiences that will make my students better citizens in our global society.
