My Students

Block play is essential to early child development. My students are using wooden unit blocks that are splintering and have worn edges. As they try to build more complex structures they are becoming increasingly frustrated as the blocks tumble to the ground.

I have five-year-old students from all over the world in my classroom.

We are an active group and we attend class full-day, so there is a lot of time to work in groups and play cooperatively. This is a transitional kindergarten class that is very hands-on. Manipulative objects and quality building materials allow for direct exploration within the area of mathematics.

My Project

Imagine a well stocked block building area with enough materials for 30 children to plan, build and explore. We'd like to stock our shelves with good quality hardwood unit blocks, block accessories like trucks and arches, and tabletop building materials like non-standard building blocks made from real tree branches and geometric materials that stick together with magnets.

With 30 children in a class we have outgrown our standard sets of building materials.

Our unit blocks are old and worn, no longer offering quality, precise building experiences. Using building materials to enhance and reinforce our mathematics units will lead to more exploration, cooperation and meaningful social play.
