My students need supplies like display boards, markers, colored pencils and a drying rack to create, display, and share their student-driven research projects.
As an elementary teacher, I understand how important it is to teach the skills my students will need for the future. I don’t just teach them what they need to know “now”, but the skills they will need when they become young adults and part of the workforce.
I teach 24 fantastic 3rd-grade students in a low-income/high poverty school in central Los Angeles.
Most, if not all, my students live in apartment complexes or multi-family homes. They have an unwavering interest in learning. Their parents are equally enthusiastic and supportive of their education. Unfortunately, they have limited resources.
My students are striving to be critical thinkers, innovative inventors, and problem solvers who will utilize their learning and skills to contribute to society.
My Project
This year I would like to incorporate Genius Hour into my curriculum. Genius Hour allows students to explore their own passions and encourages creativity in the classroom. It provides students a choice in what they learn during a set period of time during school. Students will choose a "passion project". Then they will spend several weeks researching the topic before they start creating a product that will be shared .
The materials chosen for this project will enable my students to create a product in order to share their research and findings with the class/school/world.
Students will have several options to choose from for their final product. Students will be able to use a mini display board or blank book to share their findings. They will be able to use the glue, markers, color pencils, and construction paper to add data, pictures, and explanations to the display board or book. For those students that prefer to make a model, the diorama will be a great option. The possibilities are endless.
Genius Hour helps to facilitate a culture of learning that students will carry with them forever.
