Genetics With Pea Plants

Help me give my students a chance to learn genetics with a hands-on experiment. Students will grow different pea plants and crossbreed them. The Non-Purple Stem Hairless Seeds will be crossbred with the Yellow-Green Leaf Seeds.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

Genetics can be tricky to learn for students since DNA and chromosomes are so small. It is difficult to understand something you cannot see, unless you are good at visualizing things. My students struggle with mathematical concepts and the punnet squares used to determine the probability of an organisms trait is exactly that. The supplies I am asking for will allow the students a chance to grow peas with specific traits and then crossbreed them with each other creating plants with new characteristics.

Growing and crossbreeding peas will give students a visual of how parent genes can be passed down to the offspring, giving them a real world example of what they are learning.

My goals for this project is to have the students be responsible for the care of the plants and do all the steps themselves. Each class period will be in charge of growing a different plant species, then each will create their own crossbreed samples. We can use these plants to determine the probability of each trait and create punnet squares showing our results. Classes will work together to create one data set.

These supplies would help engage my students with the content, as well as, giving them responsibility and independence in their own learning.
