I know this proposal may seem a little over indulgent, but I would like you to consider these two scenarios. 1. You are a vice-president or a manager (or pick a job title) at a fortune five hundred company. You reach into your desk to grab a pencil and a sticky note in order to jot a reminder to yourself and notice that you have run out of these supplies. What do you do? Probably you (or your assistant) walk down to the supply closet (or supply room, if you are so lucky) where there are 10 variety of pencils and 20 different colors of sticky notes to choose from. 2. Now imagined that you are a teacher in my school and working with a student on the non-fiction book All About Spiders. Suddenly, the student has a brilliant idea connecting the lives of wolf spiders with the book about wolves that was read in class the day before. The student wants to mark the book with a sticky note, noting his brilliant connection, so that we can discuss it in class later on. But when s/he goes to the supply center, we are out of sticky notes and all of the pencils are broken. What do you do? There is no supply closet in an urban public school, no place to go and replenish these much needed supplies. So what happens? Either the students goes and begs another teacher for supplies, but they probably don't have any either. Or, in my classroom, I write myself a note, and sometime in the next week or so, when my job as a full time teacher and a full time grad student don't interfere, I race to Staples before 9pm and pick up the needed supplies – with my own money. But by this point in the week, and the great idea is gone, the teachable moment has been lost, and any interest in reading that was garnered in the child is gone. Wouldn't this scenario be amazing if that same student, upon discovering the missing supplies, we able to get the much needed supplies from the teacher!? What a magnificent day that would be! I am asking for a variety of general supplies – pencils, pens, sticky notes, index cards, glue, crayons, markers, colored pencils, paper, staples, paper clips, staplers, scissors, tape, tape dispensers, dry erase markers, etc… so that my students can have the necessary supplies to get the most of their education.
