My students need books about gender inclusivity and diversity like "Who Are You? A Kid's Guide to Gender Identity."
This project expired on October 17, 2018.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
In my classroom, there is a wide range of students from very diverse backgrounds who are always teaching me new ways to look at the world. The school in which I work is wonderfully sensitive to the needs of students and staff, but additional resources are always welcome. I feel that my students will have better access to the content they require to be successful if each and every one of them has the tools (beyond the classroom budget) they need to engage.
My kids are inspiring, resilient, and absolutely amazing.
They deserve resources that I could never hope to give them without the support of amazing donors like you!
Our school district has made huge strides in inclusivity and the celebration of diversity over the years. One wonderful resource that they have taken the time to curate is a set of books for each grade level that highlights the story of African Americans and shows our students images, much like their own, in a positive light. It is my hope to craft a Donors Choose project that will give each grade level team (pre-K through 5th) a package of books featuring gender-inclusive stories. These books will both educate adults and allow students to see themselves reflected positively in books their teachers are valuing.
Gender is a spectrum, and school should be a welcoming place for anyone on that spectrum.
It is one on which we find our students spread all along in their diversity. Gender has different implications for different students - some students might be cisgender. Some students might be transgender. Some students might be two-spirits, or grappling with the physical ramifications of being intersex, or are exploring their gender identity. These books will work as a toolkit to allow teachers to feel confident approaching these topics and will act as curricular resources for rich classroom learning around gender inclusivity.
