My Project

I have never in my life had a more exciting, challenging, hilarious, and rewarding experience than that of teaching Gen Z Shakespeare's seminal classic Romeo and Juliet. Everyone gets into it. The football players can wait to "rizz up" Juliet, the girls giggle over Friar Lawrence and Nurse, and even the quiet kids sometimes get to have their moments. The friendships, epiphanies, and lessons learned from these timeless characters stay with my students when they leave my classroom. It is, without exaggeration, my students' absolute favorite time of year.

This opportunity is not possible without making this text available for ALL students of every background, level, and exceptionality.

My students are smart, creative, and eminently terrified of their future, but in great literature, they can find themselves reflected, and this is a work that has stood the test of time again and again. In these pages lie struggles, conflicts, heartbreaks, and passions that continue to deeply resonate with teenagers. Giving all of my students access to this experience helps them grow, helps them love literature, shows them that "old" doesn't always have to equal "hard."

Inclusion is an important part of my classroom, but so is challenge, struggle, and growth. The No Fear Shakespeare edition of this play leaves space for all of that. It lets me create a safe environment both for the wary to access the text on their own terms, and for the brave to push their understanding and skill to the limit. Help me bring this amazing work of literature to my classroom so every student can see the Bard's immortal words for themselves.
