The students at C.H. are eager to use hands-on materials in multiple ways, and our school has created a makerspace lab where they can use a variety of manipulatives to design, build, and even learn programming/coding skills. Our school is in the process of transitioning to a Montessori school, and I am the technology/makerspace specialist who will be serving students on a rotation basis. Students will have the opportunity to spend 50 minutes a day during a three week rotation creating and documenting their learning.
Our students need more opportunities to not only use their imagination but also to integrate and meet standards in science, math, and computer science.
Our makerspace area helps provide opportunities in a student-led atmosphere. Offering choices ensures students are more engaged in their learning, while building deeper meaning and understanding. We also collaborate with the art teacher to integrate skills and standards taught in that discipline. Our students need to be active and be exposed to a variety of ways to learn. They are curious about the world around them, and they want to find answers to the questions they wonder about.
Theses add-ons will expand our base kits we currently have to allow students to create more complex and interesting works. Students have enjoyed our Gears!Gears!Gears, Keva blocks, and our Q-Ba-Maze kits. These are items that many of our families do not use at home, so students are so excited and motivated to build many things, while learning some basic engineering principles.
The Gears station has been very popular, and it is amazing to see the look on students' faces when they realize how the gears work together and make things move.
The students would enjoy being able to add on more items to create larger items that inter-connect. All of the items on the list help build problem-solving skills and creativity.
