Gearing Up for Second Grade!

My Project

I work with two second-grade classes (60 amazing children). They range in diversity and ability. Some are Autistic, and many receive special education services. We are a Title I school, and all of my students are from low-income households, so they all receive free breakfast and lunch every day.

The latest brain research suggests that simply changing a few things makes a HUGE difference in student learning.

I spent my summer learning about the research behind "Building Thinking Classrooms" and learning how to implement this amazing way of teaching and learning. As a result, I am removing the traditional desks and transitioning to vertical learning surfaces (think cellophane covering bulletin boards that students write on with dry-erase markers that are velcroed to the wall erased with the bath mitts) and fully adopting flexible seating (stretching out on yoga mats standing at tables lifted by bed risers, and using some of our existing seats with the lap desks). Making these simple changes will get my students out of a desk with more oxygen flowing to their brains and collaborating with their peers to engage in high-level thinking. I'm really excited about this!

I'm also requesting stickers as reward items for all the great things I envision seeing, pencil pouches for each student's belongings, oil-based sharpies to label students' belongings, clothespins for students to make flexible seating choices, a duster to keep things clean, and a few decorations to brighten up the room.
