My Project

Availability of backpacks/ book bags and basic supplies such as water bottles and folders is essential for school success. At this point in the school year, I have used up all the supplies I purchased for my students. With the recent influx of immigrant students, many more such supplies are needed as they do not have anything. These students have already lost a full semester of learning and are joining mid-year. They are in urgent need of these basic items to ensure that their learning and integration can start.

Imagine a teen going to school carrying books in a shopping bag as they do not have a proper backpack.

What would it make us feel if we had to do that and all our peers had backpacks?

My students are facing many struggles on a daily basis, including food insecurity, lack of clothing, lack of hygiene supplies, lack of a permanent place to stay/sleep, and lack of basic school supplies. I try to have all supplies available in my room to remove as many barriers as I can to help them have healthy and successful lives.
