Garden Club!

Help me give my students the last few supplies we need in our two gardens! The deck box will allow students to maintain a neat and organized work space!

My Students

What better place for a couple of gardens than a school named after a farmer? Our elementary school is named after after a Japanese-American farmer who was a victim of internment during WWII! Many of our students have expressed an interest in learning more about botany as a way to connect with our school's history. One young girl even explained that she could not wait to "get her hands dirty!"

Although the school is set near many once large, open fields, many students live in condominiums or apartment buildings.

This does not lend itself to experimenting and engaging in the hands-on science of plant life. The gardens on campus will be a perfect place to introduce these lessons and get students outdoors.

As a part of kindergarten cirriculum I have taught about the needs of plants and seen just how impressed and intrigued students are when they plant and water radish seeds. The look on their faces when they see their first sprouts are priceless. I can't wait to watch as they admire something that grows much larger, such as a tomato plant!

My Project

In an age of fast-paced and tech oriented learning, our garden club will give students the opportunity to slow down and get in touch with the natural world of plants, insects, bird, and the list goes on!

Between the Monarch Butterfly garden and the vegetable garden, students will engage in hands-on lessons planned to develop their understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards.

Additionally, students will have the chance to work outside and see just what it takes to grow the food they put on their plates each day at lunch!

Finally, students will have the chance to engineer and problem solve in search of new and sustainable ways for growing food and supporting endangered species.
