Gaming Our Way From Pre-K

My students need a Family Engagement Language Pack, board games and puzzles that help my Pre-K students become scholars, learn to play and follow rules, and learn how to learn in a classroom setting.

My Students

This is my second year as a teacher for a Pre-K level to 2nd grade self-contained class with special education students. My students have a variety of disabilities and challenges that interfere with their education. As a result, the students are part of a self-contained special education classroom known as CARES.

Our students learn about the world around them by participating in hands-on learning activities.

Building, creating, and trying out new learning is how ideas stick! Although learning is a challenge for our students, these little learners are excited to learn new things!

My Project

I am the CARES special education teacher at the local elementary school. My students are those with the most challenging learning needs in the district. Every year, I get a new batch of preschool students who I must turn into children able to learn in a classroom setting. When these kids come to me, they have few academic skills, little ability to sit still, follow rules, or play with others. My job is to help them move from being Pre-K students to being Kindergarten students.

One way that children learn is through board games.

There are many great board games, as well as learning activities, that help students learn. Cooperative games such as those from Haba and My First Golden Games teach young students how to follow rules, take turns, and be good sports. Puzzles and puzzle manipulative tasks help young students learn to complete given tasks, teach basic academic skills, and help students sit and pay attention to details. Finally, academic tasks such as sorting tasks, posting tasks, and family engagement games help young students learn basic math and phonics skills that will then lead to academic learning skills.

My Pre-K students will benefit from this project that includes a variety of board games. I have always been a huge fan of games, and I am excited to introduce them to my young students to help them learn in my classroom.
