My Students

At my Title I high school, I engage students in the classroom by incorporating hands-on activities. I teach in a "flipped" classroom model, which means that my students take notes and do reading at home so I can work directly with each student in the class.

Eighty-two percent of the students at my school receive free or reduced price lunch.

My students are charismatic, hard-working teenagers who are struggling to overcome the restraints growing up in poverty has placed on them. While attending my school, each student receives vocational training. This prepares them for careers after high school. However; for many of the students in my class, college will provide them with the true means to move out of that lowest 20% income bracket. Between the cost of maintaining a 40 year-old school and deep budget cuts for public schools, my extremely supportive administrative team can only approve the bare essentials for our classroom. I know that the students in my class would benefit from having educational games in the classroom. Purchasing all of the games myself will take years, time that some of these students do not have.

My Project

By using educational board games in the AP Environmental Science and AP Human Geography classroom, we can model complex concepts like the spread of disease and the evolution of populations. By transforming classic board games, such as turning Monopoly into Oppression Monopoly, my students will be able to explore the distribution of wealth. Students will demonstrate their understanding of regional politics by applying the theories we learned in class to win the game. The games will be supplemented by reading and writing assignments that allow me to assess student understanding of the concepts. These lessons will be memorable and will help students make vital real world connections to the lessons.

Adding games to my classroom will add to the interactive, engaging nature of my classroom.

These games provide students the opportunity to connect the concepts in our books to real world problems. These connections mean that the students will remember what they have learned in the classroom and will be able to apply difficult topics, like epidemiology, to current events (like the Zika outbreak).
