Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As an occupational therapist working in a community middle and high school, my students come from diverse backgrounds. Their diagnoses vary as well and include Autism, Intellectual Disabilities, Down Syndrome, Cerebral Palsy, Attention Deficit Disorder, other rare syndromes, as well as varied learning disabilities.

Many of my students struggle with basic tasks including: feeding, dressing, socialization, writing and reading.

Despite their struggles, my students are hard working, dedicated, and motivated and they strive to improve their skills and abilities every day.

My Project

Games are one of the many tools that I use to help my students achieve their goals. Many standard games have therapeutic benefits for the participant(s), and help promote cognitive and visual perceptual/motor skills (among other age appropriate developmental skills).

While participating in games, my students also have the opportunity to work on socialization skills with a peer(s).

Turn taking, adhering to the rules of the game, asking questions and/or working collaboratively in teams are some of the examples of the social skills they get to practice.

These games will be additional resources for my students to work on improving the foundation skills necessary to promote academic achievement and socialization.
