My Students

My students are first graders who are eager to learn! I teach at a school in Portland, Oregon. While much of Portland is not that diverse, there are five different home languages in my classroom. Students share their kindness, enthusiasm, and ideas with each other to grow their thinking as engaged learners.

My first graders are passionate about learning and love to read and learn in the community.

My students are curious about the world, and need many hands-on experiences, from high-interest books to science experiments to art projects. Since they were home last year during their kindergarten year, they did not have a robust experience in using and sharing hands-on materials.

My kids are also advancing mathematicians! Students in the early grades need hands-on math tools, and to learn math through games, not just a workbook. Allow me to share strategy games with my class, like checkers, chess, and mancala. They will practice conflict resolution skills and turn-taking while building their strategic thinking.

My Project

As a part of my last project, our class got 4 sets of checkers and Introductory Chess games. We use them as part of math activities, for Choice on Fridays, and for indoor recess. The kids love them! They are learning turn-taking, visualizing, and strategic thinking.

Students are having so much fun that they forget that they are learning!

Many of these new learning games also involve turn-taking and problem solving, like Jenga and Magic Labyrinth. A few of the games are cooperative so that kids work together to achieve a goal, like Outfoxed and Race to the Treasure. IceCool2 will align so well with our science unit on Force and Motion, and Planet will align with our life sciences unit. First graders love to play, and these new games will allow them more choices so that they can continue to learn while they play.
