My students need games such as triangle card holders, playing cards, PlayMonster, UNO, Phase 10 to learn sportsmanship, perseverance, strategy, and teamwork.
Our school includes a large variety of students from various countries all over the world. One hundred percent of the students at my school receive free or reduced-price lunch, and we are a school-wide recipient of Title I funds.
One of my favorite parts of my job is seeing the change that my students undergo over the course of the year.
I am fortunate enough to see kids develop ways to express kindness each and every day. They use manners that weren't present in August. I have seen students who loathed reading turn into book lovers. A great part is hearing students say that math is their favorite subject because that was not true for me as a child. My classroom is full of faces and personalities that will impact our future world. As a teacher, I believe it is my job to do everything I can to make sure that impact will be a positive impact.
My Project
These games will go to help teach the not only good "life lessons" of perseverance, teamwork, and strategy to our kids... but these are really lessons that will help them get and keep a job in their future. We prepare them well academically, but there is so much more that goes into being a successful adult than book smarts and memory recall.
These games could ignite a passion in our kids, or even an interest; Few of our kids play sports after school, and even less do musical clubs/activities, so games could be where they find their niche!
Some games will be literacy based, some will be working with numbers, and some will just be fun and strategy based. Keep reading to find out just what a Game Club would look like!
This project would be used for a "club" at our school Immediately! Many clubs are hosted, and I would love to start a Game Club in the coming fall semester. Many of our students do not attend after school extracurriculars, many go home to empty homes, and some stay at school due to no childcare after hours. This would be an opportunity for me to teach our kids these games and give them an interest in something other than just "sitting around." My plan is to teach them a new game each week for the first half of our hour club. The second 30 minute block I would like them to choose what they've enjoyed and play a round of that game with friends who also choose that. This will be a smaller club to ensure kids are learning rules and playing by them, treating others in a positive way (congratulating even if they lose), and continuing to make positive choices about things to do with their time!!
