My Students

My students are amazing individuals with many different needs. I have four students with Severe Special Education needs and challenges, including two girls with Down Syndrome, one boy with autism, and another boy with an intellectual disability who add so much adventure and love to my classroom.

Anxiety and stress among my students has become one of my biggest concerns.

I have 18 other students who have their own individual needs, including two girls who have lost a parent (one a month ago) and have emotional needs. I have students with diagnosed Anxiety Disorder, Sensory Processing Disorder, Depression and learning that has been impacted by the pandemic. The learning gaps and academic, emotional, social needs are more visible than ever. What can one teacher do to attend to the many different needs that are to be met each day? Well, one idea I have is to provide a game time once a week where we can decompress and enjoy being together and having fun!

My Project

Since the pandemic, I'm noticing my students have much more anxiety than ever before. I am meeting with parents and sending my kids to see our school counselor more than I ever have in the past to talk about the stress and anxiety they are experiencing.

I'm feeling like my kids need an hour each week to just play together and decompress from the stress and anxiety they are bringing to school with them.

Playing games will also help to build our classroom community, as the kids sit at their tables and play together. I'm hoping this time will bring enjoyment and create friendship. It will also be a benefit to their social and emotional needs.

New headphones would greatly benefit their ability to hear the lessons on the Math and Language Arts programs, such as Lexia and Zearn, that we use to learn the State Curriculum each day. Oil pastels for each table will be used for art projects, which is a valueable way for my students to express their emotions and relieve the stress and anxiety of the day.
