Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to keep things simple and provide my students with games and experiences that promote cooperative learning skills.
My students love playing board games during recess.
We are a K-8 school in East Harlem, NY that focuses of the whole child. Our vision is to nurture our students' social and emotional well being while providing a rigorous curriculum that will enhance the skills necessary to become lifelong cooperative learners.
My Project
Due to neighborhood concerns, many of our parents do not allow their children to play outside after school. My goal is to increase specific skills that are learned through playing games. Through playing games at recess I hope to increase turn taking, following directions and cooperative play skills. Board games offer an opportunity to increase social skills that ipad or video games cannot provide.
I recently purchased a set of Uno Cards and Sorry for one class to use in the cafeteria and was overwhelmed with the response from the other classes.
They are asking where their set of games are! I am eager to capitalize on their excitement of playing games with their classmates.
