Gaga for Guinea Pigs!

My students need guinea pig-related books and supplies to engage all readers.

This project expired on May 2, 2014.

My Students

Did you know that a child's reading level will grow by 2.66 years in one year if they read for sixty minutes a day? Without any other instruction, this huge growth is possible if children independently read books at their level for one hour a day.

Our wonderful principal bought us a guinea pig after students wrote persuasive arguments regarding their choice of class pet!

The children love taking care of our class guinea pig, and having related books would greatly benefit my learners. One of the class's biggest challenges is reading non-fiction text. By the end of the year, I want students to read informational text successfully so they are on track for college and career readiness. This class loves to learn! Some students remark they don't want to go home at the end of the day, and one young lady asks almost every morning as she walks in, "What are we learning today?" Only one student is reading at a third-grade level, so we need first- and second-grade materials to build skills.

My Project

A big part of the standardized test the third graders need to pass to be promoted to 4th grade involves non-fiction texts. These books and supplies look very engaging, and the kids will take them home every day to read. We recently did a unit on mammals, and it would be so great to have these books because the science textbook is too hard for most of the kids to read on their own. They get very frustrated. We will use the fiction books to work on our fluency and engage struggling readers. The supplies will be used to make observations during Science and improve our scientific writing.

Your donation will transform the students' learning.

With the new national Common Core standards, a great emphasis is placed on non-fiction text. Your donation will ensure this class is on track to succeed in their college and career!
