Futures Filled With Financial Literacy

My students need a laptop to create PowerPoint presentations in order to teach their peers about financial literacy.

My Students

For the past seven years, I have taught a variety of grades at a Title I (low income)school. The students come from a neighborhood that is gang-infested and has a high transiency rate. A minority of the families have home computers, and even fewer have the Internet.

As we get even deeper into the 21st century, my students are stuck in the mid 20th.

Their parents work for the bare essentials, and any experiences they have on computers is at school. Currently, my classroom has 2 (barely) functioning computers that are older than my students (running Windows 98).

My Project

I am in need of a laptop for students to create PowerPoint presentations regarding their business endeavors and financial responsibility. At some point in school, every child is asked, "What do you want to be when you grow up?" Well, beyond choosing a career, children need to know what to do with the money they make from that career and how to lead a financially successful life. In the fourth grade, students are involved in a "Dreams to Jobs" unit in which they learn about different careers, entrepenuers and how to run a business. At our school 4th grade students start small businesses in which they come up with a product and sell it to other classes on a "market day". The project includes interviewing for different positions in the company, creating a name and logo for the business, and working together to manage costs, supplies, marketing, and sales. One aspect I would like to add to the project is a PowerPoint presentation.

In today's economy, it is vital that students have financial literacy.

They need to know what to do with it when they have it. They need to know how to spend it, how to save it and how to plan for the future. With this laptop, students will create PowerPoint presentations on various aspects of running a business. They will include what they have learned about profit, debt, business loans, and fiscal responsibility. With your help, learning can become even more meaningful, motivational & fun!
