First, I will tell you what is unique about my students: some live in apartments, some live in houses and some live in shelters; some speak English and some are learning English; some have a big family and some have a small family; and some of them have an easy time learning and for some of them, they learn in an untraditional way.
Now, I will tell you how they are compatible: all of them love playing, creating and experimenting.
They love books and they love being read to. They love to do puzzles, draw and sing songs. They like Legos and blocks and soccer and hula hoops. They are all loved. They are all silly. They are all smart and gifted in their own way.
At the beginning of the day, they run to greet each other and at the end of the day, they moan and complain about having to say goodbye. We are a school family and every day we say, "We are smart! We are powerful! We will change the world!"
Will you help us do that?
My Project
Every day, just after reading practice but before math, we have writing. We write stories, checklists, letters and step by step instructions for things. We also illustrate everything with pictures that start out with people with just heads and legs but by the end of the year they have bodies and arms and facial expressions.
Writing is an important way for the students to explore their creativity.
They tell us about their favorite park, their best friend, their families.
In the beginning, we set a goal to write our name and draw a picture. Then we aim to draw a picture and label it. By June, they can write 3 page stories with sentences and detailed pictures.
These materials will help the children strengthen their fine motor by gripping jumbo pencils correctly. The colored pencils add flair to their pictures and the skin color pencils allow them to personalize their drawings because we don't all have the same skin tone. The Draw and Write boards will allow them to practice letters like "p", "b", "d", and "q" which sometimes confuse us because they look so much alike.
We have a lot of stories to tell in our classroom. Will you help us to do that?
