I am a second-year teacher, and I teach first grade at P.S. 326 in Brooklyn. Over 70 percent of the children in my school receive free or reduced-price lunch. There is also a high population of students in the English as a Second Language program. P.S. 326 is a small school that includes pre-kindergarten through first grade. Since it is a smaller school, the budget is also smaller than the budgets of larger schools.
I currently have twenty-one students in my classroom and they are very eager learners. Our school day is so busy that the kids hardly have any down time during the day. We focus on reading, writing, and math so much that sometimes science is not high on the priority list. My students all enjoy science yet our science program does not have many hands-on activities. We use hands-on activities to teach them all of the other subjects because we know that it works best. Students at this age need real experiences. They remember more and enjoy learning more when they are directly involved. With all this said, I would love to bring science centers and materials into the classroom. Science is incorporated into all aspects of the school day. In our school, Thursday is science day and this is when we engage in most of our science activities.
I would love to have several hands-on science centers in the classroom so that my students can be actively engaged. Some of these centers include the five senses, life cycles, magnets, the body, nutrition, plants, weather and seasons, color mixing, and sink or float. All 21 students in the class would explore each of these concepts. The activities vary in ability level and provide many different ways to learn the same concept. I would also love to have a science listening center for the students to use. They would be able to work individually and with small groups to complete all of the science centers.
My students love science and I know that these materials would be used be very eager first graders. I want to thank you in advance for your generous donation.
