Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Oh, so that's what they mean by a hemisphere!" Juan's "aha" moment came when I was explaining weather fronts using an old borrowed globe from another room. The difference hands on equipment will make for my students is the difference between lightning bugs and pure lightning.
My students are an eager group of bilingual students, most of whom are the first in their families with a formal education.
They attend an inner city school with a high poverty rate and little exposure to life experiences that they relate to science concepts. They love learning new concepts and sharing their knowledge with their siblings.
Even with the basic supplies we have and outdated textbooks, they are making connections between the science disciplines. Their teachers and families have ingrained the importance of school in them and they are always asking for more work and pushing for more ways to learn.
My Project
Everything about earth and space fascinates my students. The materials I am requesting will bring what they see in the textbooks alive and give them a true, hands-on, interactive experience that will create lasting learning.
My lessons on geology that rely on the textbook photos will take on a whole new meaning when students are actually able to classify and examine real rocks to compare their properties.
The microscope, see it grow plant lab and butterfly nursery will give the students ownership of their learning and teach them to be good stewards of our planet's creatures.
The learning games will reinforce their knowledge and encourage them to share what they know with others. The practice provided will also improve their scientific vocabulary and give them the confidence of having mastered the field of study.
Most of my students have not traveled beyond their neighborhoods.
Their exposure to science and nature is limited. Your donation will give them a clearer picture and a hands-on connection to the importance of science to their lives. It will also expose them to experiences that will build their confidence as scientists and inspire them to continue their studies. They have the drive, these materials will help them focus their energy and natural curiosity to make lasting connections to science.
