Help me give my students a strong start to becoming great readers. With resources like Match-A-Sound! Phonemic Awareness Boxes and AlphaTales Box Set my students can practice literacy skills as a group and independently.
Our classroom is a structured teaching classroom designed to meet the needs of preschool students with significant social and communication delays and disabilities. Many of my students have been recently diagnosed with a disability such as autism, and many others are currently going through the evaluation process. Many students are nonverbal or are just learning to communicate using pictures, gestures, or words. Many of the students have not yet developed the foundational skills needed to be an active participant in the classroom and need highly reinforcing and motivating items, toys, and activities to gain their interest.
My Project
Strong instruction in phonemic awareness during the preschool years has been proven to be a predictor of future reading success in students. My students are at the very beginning of their road for learning to read. The more often students are exposed to hearing sounds and words the faster they will develop phonemic awareness.
Students will be better able to practice manipulating the sounds they hear in language becoming stronger readers down the road through rhyming, segmenting, and hearing sounds in words.
Materials from the project like the Alphatales books and Match-a-Sound activity boxes will engage my students in phonemic awareness activities both in whole group and independent work stations.
