Help me get my students to pass their mock legislation so that it can be seen by our Florida Governor to possibly be an ACTUAL law in the state of Florida!
Youth in Government is a program that allows students to participate in an interactive experience with State Government. Students write bills to address state and local problems and then debate those bills in a mock legislature.
In the spring of each year, participants of our Jr.
YIG program may attend the Junior Assembly. Assembly delegates take on the role of state Senators or Representatives as they guide their own ideas (in the form of legislation) through the YIG’s model legislative process.
At past Jr. Assemblies, delegates from various chapters proposed bills on the following: Gun Safety Education in Florida, Rehabilitation Housing in Florida for Homeless Veterans, Mandatory Automobile Inspections, Landfill Regulations in Florida, Texting and Driving, & Motorcycle Helmets.
Our school is the ONLY Middle School in the state that offers Youth In Government not only as an afterschool program, but an elective course as well! Which is such a great opportunity for our kiddos. This elective course is not only unique, but it provides opportunities for our community to get involved too. Students meet with local representatives, legislators, local businesses, lobbyist, and lawyers. They formulate their own opinions and then apply them through their bills, debates, and speeches.
My Project
The Fort Myers YMCA Branch of the SKY Family YMCA is proud to sponsor the PLDMS Chapter of Florida YMCA Jr. Youth in Government (YIG), a student-run, student-led model government and youth development program where students work to solve state and local problems through legislation. Our school is the YIG chapter that serves students at PLDMS with students ranging from 6th to 8th grade.
Our Jr.
YIG delegates each year raise money towards their trip to the Florida Jr. YIG State Assembly, a 3-day model government session held in FL. All of our students participate in some form of fundraising, and we are proud to teach this valuable civic skill as part of our programming. This year we have our largest group of students at 22 and hope to be the largest JYIG in the state and the only Middle School in the state to offer JYIG as an elective course!
By donating to our fundraiser you are helping students to civically participate in a mock legislature to help pass their bills. If their bill passes both the House and Senate, it can be looked at by the Florida Governor to be an actual law in the state of Florida! Bills range from Police Body Cameras, Helping the Florida Reef, Bike Lanes, Red Tide Prevention, Car Inspections, Sunscreen Bans, and so much more!
