Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you know how powerful it is to see something you made being enjoyed by someone else? My special needs students need that experience; they have a lot to learn. The books we will make are going to be showcased for classmates, parents and friends. As authors my students will become literary scholars.

We are in a small close-knit community with limited resources.

In our community most people speak Spanish in their home. The local library is small and has limited hours. Due to recent budget cuts we have limited opportunities to use our school library. Books are shared by our teacher and given to us, but we have lots of difficulty reading them by ourselves. Many of our parents can read, but are not comfortable reading in English so they have a hard time reading some of the books we bring home as well. We love to handle and look at picture books, and we are learning to create our own stories. We are learning how to be careful with books so that we can have them to read over again later.

My Project

We have requested coloring pencils, color sticks and book-making kits to make it easier to construct books on a regular basis. We love so many different types of pictures that we need different materials to make the art work in our books. We enjoy pages with things that move like WIGGLY EYES. We like books with different textures and raised pictures so we will use the FOAM MAGNET BUG SET and PAPER ANIMAL AND CREATURES PACK. Some of us have a hard time drawing specific shapes and objects so we will need to use STENCILS. Some of us have difficulty using writing tools, and others need to build more strength and flexibility in our fingers so PLOX, the SAX BEGINNERS PAINT PACK, and FINGERPAINT FARM ANIMALS PACK will address these specific and individual needs. Some of us really have our own ideas and want to make a book so different that we only need paper and a good stiff cover that is why the COVER-IT NOTEPAD PACK, CRAFTS 8'' CHIPBOARD KIDS PACK and CARD-STOCK PAPER are requested.

In our class there are 9 individuals with very specific special needs and skills.

Our teacher needs to do her very best to address all of those needs, and these materials can help her. She needs to help us learn to make choices and try our best. When you help her with these materials she can plan more activities to motivate us. Any excited student is a motivated student. Please do what you can to provide her the materials to make us excited try our best!
