Future Diplomats Need to Read!

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are enrolled in an Advanced Placement Human Geography class. Unfortunately we are 3 books shy of a class set. Acting as foreign diplomats in my classroom, students learn about the challenges different countries face. They need the book to understand the basic terminology.

My students are interested in learning about the world outside of Texas.

My school is an international studies charter school. Instead of going to a comprehensive school where they could be on multiple sports teams and have events like homecoming, they chose to come to our school so they can engage in globally focused curriculum, participate in the Model United Nations class, debate internationally, travel internationally, and become a member of the global community. Many of them had never left the city until coming to our school. This bright, motivated, and inquisitive group of kids wants to take on the world's challenges.

My Project

My students will be taking the Advanced Placement Human Geography exam in the Spring. For many of them, this is the first AP course they will take. They need the book to read and review all the terminology for the exam. Most of my students can not afford to buy a book for personal use, so instead I offer my classroom after school for them to complete the weekly reading assignments. In addition to teaching students "where stuff is", human geography focuses on "why stuff is the way it is". Students often become interested in solving global problems. It is my hope that by reading this material and engaging in the class, students will be inspired to pursue careers that help solve world problems.

Students need the tools to be successful.

Material from the AP exam comes directly from the book. Why not give a group of deserving, motivated, and inspiring students the tools to be successful?
