Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have a wonderful group of 31 delightful, creative 4th Graders. They love expressing their creativity in writing as budding authors. Students plan, draft, revise and publish their writing. We currently do not have a printer in our classroom and are unable to publish typed hard copy print.
I have 31 beautiful 4th Graders in a Detroit Public School.
They are motivated to learn, have excellent attendance and are creative and playful. I am constantly amazed at the ideas they generate through inquiry and being encouraged to express their ideas.
We have 800 students in our school of Kindergarten through Grade 5. Most of the families live in the neighborhood and walk to school daily. We have a 95% Latino population. The parents of my students are involved provide support at home. Our resources are limited based upon being a lower income urban neighborhood.
I teach all subjects to my students (Reading, Writing, Math, Social Studies, Science, Music, Art, Health). They are in my classroom for 6.5 hours a day. We use many innovative, hands on strategies to learn. There is a constant buzz of focused activity as the students strive to be successful.
All students have their own goal folder where they set individual goals and chart their progress. They are beautiful.
My Project
My students will publish final copies of their writing in print using the printer. Because we currently do not have a working printer in our classroom, we are currently unable to do this. It is important that the students see their writing in print in order to motivate them to progress in successful, creative writing. A Brother Wireless all-in-one printer with toner, will allow this to happen. We display our work in the hall combined with illustrations. We also create a class book of writing to make available for all to view. Each student has an individual portfolio of their final pieces to take home with them.
Students are motivated when they know others will be viewing their work.
They also will feel accomplished when they see published writing in print. This will provide production of excellence and stimulate a desire to proceed with the growth of written expression.
