This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students I service are mostly African-American and Hispanic. My students come from low-socioeconomic circumstances. The parents and community try their best to support these students. As a Special Education teacher, I service a diverse crowd of students with special needs.

My students are eager to learn, and because of the lack of technological resources at home, it results in only having technology exposure at school.

Since technology is on the rise our children need to be prepared for the future so they can be part of the work force that the Internet has to offer. My students are at-risk due to their learning disabilities, and having more technology, the better! This online-based program will help them become more familiar with the resources available through the Internet to make them successful inside and outside of the classroom. Our school is located on the southwest side of Chicago. The majority of our students come from low-poverty and diverse backgrounds who try their best everyday given the living situations they have.

My Project

ThinkCERCA is an online, CCSS-aligned literacy program with tools and content teachers need to help students learn to read closely, think critically, and develop powerful arguments. After reading various modules about financial literacy, I hope my students have a better understanding of why money matters. Since I service 7th and 8th graders this program will enhance their understanding of real-life economic situations and how they, as unique individuals, will need to understand the importance behind money management. It will help them learn to know how to save and prepare them for their futures. As a result, my hope is that they will become independent individuals and will understand the importance behind saving, spending, and investing money in their future. It will also establish a goal for them to set for themselves in dealing with financial situations. Furthermore, they will become independent from their families and have the necessary skills required to live in this diverse world.

This program will empower my students to become successful, independent, and productive individuals.

Since most of my students come from families that have low-income salaries this program will help students further their independent skills in writing, speaking, reading and debating. I believe that these skills are critical for them to learn in order to better their education and financial future to work towards their "American Dream."
