My students are first and second grade students diagnosed with autism. Their ages range from 6-9. They are amazing kids with so much energy and love to give! They love to learn and are very inquisitive!
My kids face so many challenges on a daily basis.
No matter what, they always have a smile on their face and are excited to be at school! I am so determined to ensure that all of my students experience academic success! I am dedicated to my profession and believe that every student has the ability to learn!
My Project
My students have a diagnosis of autism and therefore have difficulty maintaining focus and attention during instruction. They need constant movement in order to remain on-task during work time. At the present time, they sit at traditional desks on traditional chairs. We find that our students often rock back and forth or swing their legs just to fulfill their sensory need for movement. I have chosen non-traditional stools called “wobble chairs” that rock forward and back to help students get the movement they need while learning. Giant comfy pillows will provide seating for my students when we do activities that require them to sit on the floor. Finally, I chose soft seats and balance ball seats to help my students who have sensory issues and have difficulty sitting on hard classroom chairs. This furniture will provide my students with the opportunity to constantly move without distracting others. It will also help increase their focus and attention while meeting their sensory needs. I truly believe this furniture will make a major difference in my students’ academic success.
