Middle school can be treacherous, and expression is the most powerful tool that young people can use to quell the beast within them! In my writing class, my 145 7th and 8th grade scholars are learning to recognize that their lives are brimming with valuable stories and we are learning together to write about those experiences in a powerful way. We need a carpet for the back of our room for our Writing Community Meetings, as well as beanbags for our Independent and Partner Writing Sessions. Writing Community Meetings are an opportunity for students to gather (ideally on a rug!) at the beginning of every Writing Class for direct instruction on specific skills, and practice them with each other before going to Independent and Partner Writing Sessions. Independent and Partner Writing Sessions take place after the Writing Community Meetings (ideally on bean bags!) and are opportunities for students to choose where they want to work on their writing, integrating the skill that was taught and practiced during the Community Meeting. My students are at school from 7:30-5pm and are in a traditional classroom setting for almost the entire day. Creating a more relaxed and comfortable environment for storytelling, writing and expression will be a key element in my students honing their skills so that they can change the world.
