My Project

My first year teaching a special art class in a combined general and special education program. This project will give students a hands-on experience creating an article of clothing to take home. I hope this will give then an experience to remember and a concrete example of how art can be part of their life.

Making tie-dye is a great experience for students for several reasons, it teaches color mixing, produces a concrete example of the abstract color theories, and gives then confidence that they can make things that improves their life.

Our population includes students who struggle with typical classroom work due to their diagnosis and atypical neurology. Worksheets and 2 dimensional art often doesn't bring out the creative and kinesthetic side of making original objects the way tye dye does. The happy accidents and unpredictable nature of tie-dye makes it especially hard to visualize the finished product.

The look in their faces when they see the shirt they dyed themselves is priceless.
