I am a guidance counselor/college adviser at an alternative school in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Brooklyn Academy High School services students between seventeen and twenty-one who have not given up on their high school diploma. Our students come to us when they have not been successful in a traditional high school setting for many different reasons, but once here, about 90 percent of our students graduate. Of our 350 students, 80 percent qualify for free lunch, which demonstrates their financial needs. The problem I have been running into is that many of the students' applications to the City University of New York are never sent out because it is very difficult for the students to obtain the application fee. CUNY will not process any application without the attached money order, regardless of the student's financial status. The university will only accept the fee waivers it gives us in advance, though we only get between twelve to fifteen for each school year--certainly not enough. It is heart-wrenching to witness my students forfeiting a college education just because of the initial fee. If they were accepted, they would be set for tuition and expenses because these kids would all qualify for full financial aid. Private schools do waive their application fees, but very few of my students have the grades to get into a private school; so in most cases, applying to private universities is not an option. The amount needed to cover fifteen college application fees is fairly substantial, but any amount of money donated will be appreciated. I thank you for helping us through one of the hurdles getting in the way of our students' higher education.
