My Project

To understand why this project is so critical, look at the unique challenges faced by middle school students with intensive support needs. Like any other pre-teens, they want to look at, talk about, and experience the same things their peers do—including popular graphic novels and high-interest fiction.

Unfortunately, because traditional text can be a significant barrier, these students are frequently limited to "little kid" picture books that don't match their emotional maturity, or they are placed in front of a screen to passively listen to an audiobook.

I want to change that narrative.

With an eventual classroom set of screen-free Yoto Mini Players, we will pair physical, age-appropriate books—specifically graphic novels, high-interest fiction, and structured, accessible readers—with a tactile audio companion. Each student will receive a durable, physical "Make Your Own" Yoto card. To "read," they will independently check out a title, slide their card into the player, and use headphones to follow the printed pages, text, and artwork at their own pace. This system provides vital auditory scaffolding for our new readers while keeping them fully engaged with physical books, building functional life skills like independence, choice-making, and self-regulation.

Your generous support will help us bridge this gap. By funding this project, you are helping us build a system that goes beyond our classroom walls. When our students visit the campus library and check out a book of their choice, we will use our "Make Your Own" Yoto cards to link that specific book's audio to their personal player.
