This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Project
My students are a vibrant group of learners and together we have made the most of our very small speech therapy room in our historical landmark school. Due to the historical nature of our building, however, things like harsh ceiling lighting, antiquated plaster walls, and access to a single electrical outlet in the room make for challenges and barriers to making the room both functional and visually pleasing.
With the supplies purchased through this project, I will improve the ambient lighting in my classroom and provide improved access to charge learning technology in our small space.
The floor lamps will help illuminate our learning space so that students can better see their learning materials without harsh lighting that can be overstimulating for persons who are sensitive to excessive fluorescent light exposure overhead. The extension cords and charging bricks will allow us better ability to charge the iPads used for speech therapy exercises as well as related technology that keeps our therapy room safe such as the air purifier and box fan for warm days (as we do not have air conditioning in our school). I will utilize the wheeled cart and laptop cases to transport equipment and materials throughout the school building for convenient access to therapy materials for students of varying learning levels. Lastly, I will utilize the command strips to hang functional speech and language decor in my classroom without damaging the ancient plaster walls while providing for supports to improve the learning of visual learners in my therapy room.
