This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Steps away from a lush community garden on our historic East Los Angeles campus, globally-minded citizens are the most important things we grow here! Our school has created a place where a one-of-a-kind indoor/outdoor rural learning space sets the stage for a real-world, hands-on curriculum focused on empowering students to be lifelong critical thinkers impacting the environment and global needs. Every day is an opportunity for our students to explore their place in the world and think about how they can make it better!
Our Environmental Science and Humanitarian Magnet students make our garden GROW!
Under the supervision of a certificated garden ranger, our students have built our garden from the ground up! They do it all: choose the plants we grow, design the garden layout, plant seedlings, weed the beds, and harvest the crops.
Despite the high-quality programming and expectations we have for our students, we are still a 100% Title I school. Our ethnic population is approximately 92% Hispanic or Latino, about 17% are English Language Learners (ELLs), and around 16% receive Special Education services.
My Project
My bungalow door opens right out on our community garden. In fact, we refer to the wide walkway outside the classroom as our "porch!" While the garden has some seating options available, students can't go there without a teacher. I hope this furniture will be the start of a growing cafe-style break spot for kids to gather, study, and enjoy the natural beauty of our campus from the comfort of a well-supervised area.
As kids have come back to school, finding comfortable outdoor spaces where they can socialize safely has been a challenge.
The sun can be brutal in Southern California and so shade is a must. Any table and chairs need to be able to withstand the weather and the wear and tear of students.
