These materials will go a long way towards meeting my goal of making students skilled, passionate, habitual and critical readers. More importantly, they will help create an inviting, safe space for kids during lunch and breaks. Middle school can be a difficult time for students and a welcoming community to explore one’s interests alone or with other like-minded friends is essential to social and emotional health. During our meetings we have comic book lit circles where small groups of students pick one title they all read so they can talk about the shared text. We study writing and artist styles and attempt write/draw- alikes. We create our own superheroes. Some days we just read quietly with the doors and windows open, enjoying the cross breeze that blows through the community garden outside my door. My classroom is a bungalow set back from the main campus and twice a week I give up my lunch so any kid who needs a break from the cacophony of the lunch area has a calming space to visit. Now I just need some more places for them to sit and things to read!
