Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach math7 and math7 support. Majority of my students are no longer motivated to try doing math work because they lack even basic math knowledge such as knowing their multiplication tables. I want to use math games to get them to practice and improve their skills.
My students have typically received a D or F in math and have not experience much success when it comes to learning math.
Some have decided that they are never going to understand or be good at math, so they no longer put in any effort to learn. Some have behavior issues and act out only during math class because of their frustration in not being able to understand and do assigned work. Yet in each student, I see a hunger to learn in their excitement whenever they finally understood how to solve a problem.
When I hand them a calculator and allow them to use it to supplement their lack of basic arithmetic skills, they are more willing to try. These students just need to master basic math skills to be successful.
My Project
My students will use these games on fun Friday. They will play math games to build better social skills as well as their math skills. They will learn logical reasoning and problem solving skills. They will practice multiplication, division, addition and subtraction with Uno, Math Jenga and Battleship.
This project will be a fun way to motivate my students to improve their basic math skills and be more successful.
They have not experience success in math through traditional teaching, but they will be practicing important skills by playing games that they like. As a result, they will be more enthusiastic to learn and be able to improve their grades.
