My students have typically received a D or F in math and have not experience much success when it comes to learning math. Some have decided that they are never going to understand or be good at math, so they no longer put in any effort to learn. Some have behavior issues and act out only during math class because of their frustration in not being able to understand and do assigned work. Yet in each student, I see a hunger to learn in their excitement whenever they finally understood how to solve a problem. When I hand them a calculator and allow them to use it to supplement their lack of basic arithmetic skills, they are more willing to try. These students just need to master basic math skills to be successful.
