My students need a variety of texts. They are most excited for the Dork Diaries series. The girls were able to choose some texts that are meaningful to them.
As a fourth grade teacher, it is amazing to see my students grow. One way to help my students grow is by offering them a choice when working in groups. Our school is pushing towards students guiding his/her learning. This is a huge school and very important! But it can also be very difficult.
With offering a variety of levels of engaging texts in our classroom we can keep books in our students' hands and keep them interested in reading.
There are so many new books coming out that many of my students are showing interest in.
The goal is to keep a variety of levels as well as genres in our classroom to expose students to a wide range of literature. A genre in which students are continuing to show more interest in is Science Fiction and Fantasy. They have already given me a list of books on their wish list!
My Project
The texts that have been chosen were directly from our student's interest. We went through and made a list of the most recent books that they have seen and what they would like to read. Some of the ones that stuck out were Dork Diaries, Whatever After and Horses of Dawn.
Now the girls are the ones that seem most interested in these books.
But I think it is important to offer to books that both boys and girls are drawn to. And one series they are most excited about is the Horses of Dawn. They are really into Kathryn Lasky right now. But we didn't want to leave the boys out. So we had them pick some Jake Maddox books that were of interest. The top ones were paintball, fishing and the extreme hike. We are excited for the opportunity to read these books!
