My students need literacy centers to improve their phonics and comprehension skills such as Magnetic Word Building Boards, a Teaching Phonics Skills Activity Center and Main Idea Comprehension kit.
A typical day is very busy and non-stop. We work hard and try to complete all the subjects including reading, writing, math, social studies and science. With the common core, we push our students to perform their best. At times, it's hard to reach them all because they vary so much in ability.
My class is amazing!
I teach in an inclusive classroom, where 10 of my students have special needs and 16 are general education students. They vary in ability and needs. Some students are still working on basic phonics skills while others are reading higher level stories. My co-teacher and I differentiate a great deal as we team teach. We try to reinforce and enrich to meet the needs of our students. Our students are wonderful. They work hard and try their best to achieve.
Our school is located in Astoria. It is a good school and parents support us as much as they can. We lost many funds a few years ago and the teachers are forced to buy many things with their own money. The students are getting a bit tired of the photocopied games and activities we give them. It would be nice to have store-bought, nice games to support them and enrich them.
My Project
The resources I requested are all games for literacy centers. Every day, I work with groups of students in a guided reading group. At this time, I focus on various skills so that I can move kids up reading levels. Many times, the other kids just read from their independent books. They often read for about ten minutes and then start daydreaming or fooling around. The centers are a perfect way to keep them engaged and learning independently. The literacy centers will be available to students everyday. The groups I am not working with will be assigned a different game each day. The games they play will reinforce a skill that I think they need to work on. The games will keep them busy, engaged, and learning. The games will also give me the opportunity to really focus on my group. I won't have to worry that the other kids are just wasting time.
These donations will provide a definite excitement and variation to reading time.
I will be able to set up different centers and stations with games that reinforce skills. The children will become more independent. On each day they will visit a different center and work on a different skill. Therefore, I know that everyone will be getting something out of this time not just the group working with me. We will all be reaping the benefits.
