During early adolescence, students experience rapid physical, emotional, and cognitive changes. These shifts can make it challenging for them to regulate emotions, manage stress, or communicate needs effectively. A Calming Corner provides a safe, structured environment where students can practice these skills independently and without stigma.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the Calming Corner they were excited to utilize it. Some middle schoolers have used it to take a break, decompress, and rest until they are ready to reengage. The elementary students have benefited from the self-regulation prompts and small activities which allows them to refocus and return to learning.","fullyFundedDate":1758856872141,"projectUrl":"project/cozy-corner/9740626/","projectTitle":"Cozy Corner","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Battista","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8959038"},{"teacherId":8915967,"projectId":9871651,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity and support in fulfilling our DonorsChoose project. Through these hands-on experiences, students strengthen fine-motor skills, creativity, and confidence while developing a strong sense of pride in their work. Supplies such as broom-and-dustpan sets, Velcro dots, magnetic stickers, and disinfecting spray help keep our ICT space organized and clean. The ergonomic chair and classroom chart stand support our instruction tremendously and make it easier for Ms. Bianco and I to model and guide learning. In addition, our Scholastic News subscription has brought engaging, real-world reading experiences into the classroom and continues to support early literacy development. The students absolutely love their Scholastic News magazines!\r\n\r\nEvery item from this project plays a vital role in transforming our ICT room into a joyful, welcoming space where students can collaborate, create, and thrive. My students can't get enough of them. I had some materials in the past but they were old, outdated, and missing parts. Now, Fun Friday has taken on a whole new excitement. Every Friday, at around 1:30, we stop all lessons, pack up, and prepare for Fun Friday. The children separate into groups and run to the marble run, engineering coaster, magnetic tiles, and new art supplies. It is such a thrill to watch them use their higher order thinking skills to build, test, and improve their designs. I love seeing their beautiful art creations and structures.\r\nWhen my students first saw the materials, they didn't know which center they wanted to explore first. We decided to make a plan so that they can rotate to different centers each week. Each week, there is such an energetic buzz in the room and lots of smiling faces. Very often, they are so proud of their creations that they ask me to take pictures of them. They love to build higher and higher on the marble run. They love to make the engineering coaster work and they love the whimsical creations they make with the magnetic tiles. I love watching them use their STEM and problem solving skills. It is a pleasure to watch the teamwork that ensues.\r\nAll in all, these materials have been an amazing addition to our class. They have enriched and enhanced our classroom environment. Due to your generosity, our learning space has become more comfortable, flexible, and student-centered environment. The Lakeshore Flex-Space Washable Comfy Floor Seats and the plastic storage baskets you funded have already made a noticeable difference in our daily routine.\r\n\r\nStudents were immediately excited when they saw the new floor seats. They couldn't wait to try them out, and many commented positive remarks. During whole-group lessons, students now come to the meeting area with eagerness, choosing a seat that helps them stay focused. I've already seen improvement in participation and attention, especially from students who struggle in traditional chairs. These seats have also become a favorite option during independent reading and work time. Students love finding a cozy spot to read or collaborate with partners, and the flexible seating has helped many of them settle into tasks more calmly and confidently.\r\n\r\nThe new classroom library baskets have made a strong impact, too. With upgraded baskets, I was able to reorganize and relabel our library so students can easily find, explore, and return books on their own. The library now feels more inviting and accessible, and I've noticed students spending time browsing books and talking about what they're reading. Even students who were hesitant readers are showing more interest now that the library feels more structured and engaging.\r\n\r\nMy next steps include using the flexible seating during small-group instruction and continuing to expand our classroom library with more high-interest books. The new baskets have given us a strong foundation to keep building reading habits and independence. I will also be teaching students how to take care of our new materials so they last for many years to come.\r\n\r\nThank you again for for your contribution to this project.
