Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
At the end of last year 2019, we first heard in the news how this new virus also known as the COVID-19, was harshly hitting China. Little did we know or even imagined, that this was soon to become a world wide pandemic and that it soon was going to reach us. March 13 was the day we said to our students, "See you in two weeks", not knowing that in reality it was a farewell. Sadly, my students are 5th graders and this was suppose to be their most fun and most memorable last year in their elementary school. One thing is for sure, it will be unforgettable.
My determined 5th grade dual language scholars, were ready to embark this new "Distance Learning" journey.
Week one, we were already on board. My students and I use the Schoology platform to submit, post assignments, stay in touch and answer any questions. I have been having Zoom meetings at least three times a week, where new lessons are taught, questions are answered, assignments are clarified, emotions and feelings are expressed, and where memorable fun activities are happening. I'm glad that our school allowed my students to take home a technology device.
My Project
For the past few Fridays I have scheduled an art activity with my students via Zoom to reduce the anxiety levels they might be experiencing. My students attend a Title I school and due to the quarantine, many of my students parents are no longer working. Families only go out to purchase essential needs.
When parents send me pictures of their child's drawings through the Remind App, many are not colored and are done on a notebook line paper.
Some of my students have mentioned that they don't have certain materials to complete the task. Providing the necessary and most basic tools to my students, will make a difference and will allow them to feel confident when they share their art piece during our Zoom meetings.
