Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Coweta is a moderately sized community located in Northeastern Oklahoma. Our district serves approximately 3,500 students between Pre-K and 12th grade including the alternative school. Roughly 50% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches. Most of our students come from hardworking, middle-class families.

As a small community, there is not necessarily a lot of after school activities available for teens and tweens.

Our school district tries to supply safe, fun, and educational opportunities for our students. We currently have a very active series of clubs that meet before and after school including Book clubs, Chess club, Student Council, National Honor Society, and Spanish Club. Our students have been asking for a Table Top Gaming Club for the past several years. We have finally been granted permission by our school board to sponsor this new program. This new student-led club began meeting in January.

My Project

We began meeting in January and had twenty or more students active weekly in the Gaming Club. By providing a safe place for our students in 7th through 12th grade to socialize and engage in enriching activities, we have successfully begun building social-emotional learning among our community. We intend to continue this program in the Fall once quarantine is lifted.

As our program grows, we need to have a safe and efficient way to transport our materials from the storage area to the cafeteria where we meet.

We are offering numerous board and card games as well as Table Top RPG sessions. The RPG sessions require maps, miniatures, several resource books, and other accouterments to be successful. These can be difficult to transport by one or two people, especially as classes are dismissed. By providing a well-appointed organized cart, we will be able to make this transition smoother and get to playing much quicker.
