This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
At first glance you wouldn't think our school, housed in a quiet and unassuming building, holds close to 500 amazingly hard-working and happy learners. Their energy, captured during daily GoNoodle dancing and reading buddy time, all but seeps out of the rafters and out to the concrete jungle surrounding it.
The students come to school knowing both what is expected of them and how much their teachers love them.
What our school is lacking in resources, we make up with out-of-the-box ideas and a lot of hope. Within our classrooms, magic happens!
My Project
Currently in our first grade classroom, we are working towards becoming strong independent readers. We started our school year with one assigned book and only a few minutes of Super Quiet Uninterrupted Independent Reading Time-SQUIRT for short! As the year has progressed, my students had advanced to book shopping for their own bins and buddy reading. With the new year starting, we're ready to add a dose of fun to our reading time.
Our next step is to expand our flexible seating -after all, who wouldn't like to sprawl on the floor or sit in a fun chair while enjoying your favorite story?
These flexible floor seats will give my students the chance to read comfortably-only this time, they can be independent and choose where to sit!
