My Project

My sixth grade scientists are some of the most curious, energetic, and enthusiastic learners I have ever had the opportunity to teach. They are constantly asking “why?” and “how?” and love when science gets to move beyond the textbook and into their own hands. My goal is to create a classroom where students can explore, experiment, make mistakes, ask questions, and discover answers for themselves. These students are special because they bring so many different interests, experiences, and personalities into our classroom, and I want every student to see themselves as someone who can be successful in science.

The laboratory trays and safety goggles will allow students to work safely in small groups during investigations.

Models of tectonic plates and the ocean floor will make difficult Earth science concepts more concrete and easier to visualize. The chemistry reaction materials, iodine clock reaction kit, thermal conductivity and heat capacity materials, thermal convection kit, thermometer, and balance will allow students to actually observe and measure the science we are learning instead of simply reading about it. The ocean wave materials will also give students an opportunity to investigate how energy and movement interact in real-world systems.

My goal for this project is to build a classroom where science is something students do, not just something they read about. I want my students to leave sixth grade feeling confident using scientific tools, collecting and analyzing data, communicating their thinking, and most importantly, being curious about the world around them. These resources will help me turn our classroom into a place where students can experience those “WOW, science is actually really cool!” moments and hopefully inspire them to continue seeing themselves as scientists long after they leave my classroom.
