My Students

My students live in a community that houses children from a variety of cultural and geographic backgrounds including students whose first languages are Spanish and Arabic. Their parents are proud of their heritage and committed to their children's educations. Over half of the students in my class receive free and reduced lunches.

The majority of the students have been classmates since kindergarten and therefore love each other and take care of each other.

Due to COVID-19, the levels on which my students perform in mathematics have a greater variety, with many more potentially unseen learning gaps. Therefore, I work hard to differentiate their learning opportunities. This year I have had multiple students say to me, "I actually like math this year." I love their work ethic and desire to learn.

My Project

This request will directly support my students in their mathematics academic learning and in their social-emotional well-being. Based on state testing scores, the students in my class need extra support in developing mathematical concepts and skills. One of the best was to do this is through giving students hands-on activities. The VersaTiles, Fraction Tiles and Cuisenaire Rods will do this. Specifically, the Cuisenaire Rod will support conceptual understanding of algebraic principles and fractions

Full STEAM Ahead focuses on two important components of STEAM-- Math and Art.

The art component of this project is to support the students social-emotional well-being. When the students in my class earn a class party, we do an Arty Party. During our first Arty Party we water colored parrots and my favorite comment of the day was, "this is SOOO satisfying." I loved this normally high energy child grounded, focused, and satisfied.
